Eastern Dry Rocks

Eastern Dry Rocks is mostly inside a Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA) but some of the areas just outside the boundaries are good for lobstering. Depths range from 14 to 30 feet, and it’s considered a Novice dive. The entire Eastern Dry Rocks area is wonderful – coral fields, rocks, crevices, alleys, and all kinds of fascinating marine life. Pelagics come through in winter, and there are colorful resident Parrot Fish as well.

Eastern Dry Rocks is easy to find: just two miles east of the Sand Key Light, after Rock Key (another SPA). It’s six miles out from shore, right on the reef, actually part of the reef. See nurse sharks sleeping under ledges, jewfish (Goliath Grouper) lurking in the shadows, schools of bar jacks, the random mackerel cruising through, and of course the ever-present barracuda.

There’s always something new at Eastern Dry Rocks, a wonderfully diverse area.
